IIDEA launches new Christmas campaign to promote responsible use of video games in the family

Milan, 10 December 2024 – From today until 20 December, the second edition of the awareness campaign on the positive use of video games in the family, promoted by IIDEA, returns for the Christmas season. The initiative is part of a pan-European communication effort led by Video Games Europe, of which IIDEA is a member, and adapted by national associations to the specific needs of each country. The aim is to help families set common rules to ensure a fun and safe gaming experience.

During the holiday season, opportunities to play – especially with family – become more frequent. It’s important that parents are equipped with the tools to make the most of these moments. This will allow them to create a positive experience while fostering a constructive dialogue with their children about mindful gaming, one of the most popular activities among children and teens.

The campaign provides five practical tips on how to choose the right games using the Pan-European Game Information (PEGI) system and guides parents on how to use the parental control tools available on gaming devices. It also encourages parents to play games with their children to facilitate discussions about game time, game selection and sensitive issues such as privacy, online safety and in-game spending.

The initiative also highlights IIDEA’s “Tutto sui Videogiochi” portal, a valuable resource for parents to better understand video games. The portal was created to provide clear, simple and easily accessible information to help families maximise the potential of gaming in the home environment.

For this campaign, IIDEA has renewed its collaboration with family influencers Daniele Marzano and Mickol Lopez of Guida senza patente (@guidasenzapatente), who will invite their Instagram and Facebook communities to make a pact with their children to set common rules for safe and enjoyable gaming within the family. The campaign will be promoted on social media with the dedicated hashtags #TakeControl and #LetsMakeAPact.

The video game industry’s commitment to supporting families with free and immediate resources is yielding tangible results. According to the Children’s In-Game Spending study conducted by Ipsos for Video Games Europe, 95% of families actively monitor their children’s in-game spending and 76% of parents of children who play games report that their children do not make in-game purchases.

“Video games are not just a pastime, but an opportunity to learn and socialise. It’s important that children and teenagers can enjoy them to the full, with the support of their parents. With this campaign, IIDEA wants to promote open communication within the family and encourage adults to actively participate in playtime. Our portal, Tuttosuivideogiochi.it, is a valuable ally for parents, not only during the holiday season, but throughout the year, offering insights and advice to better understand one of our children’s favourite passions,” said Thalita Malagò, General Manager of IIDEA.
